Ever Crisis: The First Soldier makes it pretty clear that a nice childhood is ... not an option. Interacting with Sephiroth comes with risk of certain topics, among which are the torture of children, kids being raised as weapons, child neglect, endless child abuse both physical and mental, PTSD, and the resultant issues therein.
His deployment in Rhadore is his first, and also his first time interacting with 'so many people' - perhaps six or seven total. Being on the battlefield since 10 years old is one of many, many things Shinra's just invented to give him a hero's reputation. He's constantly struggling to prove himself as more than just a kid and do his job.
The Rhadorian islands are also the first time he ever feels anything he can describe as happiness or fun, though it takes him a while to decide that's what it must be.
